Japan seeks transparency in China's defense policy

TOKYO, March 4, Kyodo

Japan is closely watching the continued increase in China's defense spending and will seek further transparency in Chinese defense policy, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Friday.

"It is desirable that China further improve transparency in its national defense plan and military power," the top government spokesman said after Beijing unveiled a year-on-year rise of about 7 to 8 percent in its defense outlays for this year.

"Japan has an extremely serious concern (about China's defense policy) and will pay close attention," he said.
