FEATURE: Hiroshima high school girl speaks at CTBT symposium

By Ken Udagawa
VIENNA, March 8, Kyodo

Shizuka Kuramitsu's enthusiasm for abolishing nuclear weapons brought the 19-year-old high school student from Hiroshima an invitation to speak at a nuclear disarmament symposium in Vienna earlier this year.

"Please let us believe that we can achieve a nuclear free world," the Hiroshima Jogakuin Senior High School student said during her five-minute speech in early February at the symposium, organized by the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization.

"Please don't say it, at least in front of children, (that you don't believe you can achieve a nuclear free world before you die)," she said.
