Japan rebuts China's accusation of "double-dealing" in ties

TOKYO, March 8, Kyodo

Japan's top government spokesman Yoshihide Suga on Tuesday rebutted Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's accusation of what he called Tokyo's "double-dealing" in relations with Beijing.

Citing universal values such as freedom, democracy and the rule of law, Suga said every country needs to say what it must say when it sees a country flexing its muscles in pressing its territorial claims unilaterally -- an apparent reference to Beijing's attempts to alter the status quo in the East and South China seas.

The chief Cabinet secretary made the remarks after Wang said earlier Tuesday that the Japanese government and leaders say nice things about wanting to improve ties on the one hand and they make trouble for China at every turn on the other in what he called Tokyo's typical "double-dealing."
