Ex-China premier sends eulogy to ceremony for late Japan economist

TOKYO, March 17, Kyodo

Former Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji sent a eulogy to a farewell ceremony held Thursday for Isamu Miyazaki, a former Japanese Cabinet member who died of heart failure in January at age 92.

Zhu, who assumed the premiership from 1998 and 2003, offered condolences over the death of Miyazaki, a former head of the now-defunct Economic Planning Agency who Zhu said the Chinese people have respected, according to organizers of the ceremony.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, who attended the ceremony, told reporters the eulogy could have been sent in hopes Japan and China would develop ties like the "relationship of trust that existed between Mr. Miyazaki and Mr. Zhu."
