China rebuffs Japan's request for funding greenery foundation
TOKYO, March 26, Kyodo
The Chinese government has rebuffed the Japanese government's request that it too contribute financially to a greenery foundation that supports tree-planting projects in China, a source close to bilateral ties said Saturday.
Japan, which has unilaterally underwritten the projects for years as aid to China, felt it was time for Tokyo and Beijing to fund the work together given China's economic rise.
Following the Chinese rejection, Japan has allocated about 9 billion yen ($79.6 million) for the foundation in a supplementary budget for fiscal 2015 that passed parliament on Jan. 20.
