Chinese man rescued after failed attempt to land on Senkaku Islands
NAHA, Japan, Jan. 2, Kyodo
A Chinese man was rescued by the Japan Coast Guard on Wednesday in Japanese territorial waters around the Senkaku Islands after he attempted to land on one of the China-claimed islets using a hot-air balloon, the coast guard said Thursday.
The man, who identified himself as a 35-year-old cook from Hebei Province, said he took off on the balloon from Fujian Province Wednesday morning aiming to land on Uotsuri Island in the Japan-controlled Senkaku islet group, according to the coast guard.
The 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture sent two patrol ships and a helicopter to the area after receiving a request from Taiwanese authorities to search for a missing man around 2:25 p.m. Wednesday, it said.
