Rugby: Goromaru sharp in preseason debut with the Reds
BRISBANE, Australia, Feb. 12, Kyodo
Japan fullback Ayumu Goromaru made an impact in his brief debut for the Reds in the Super Rugby side's final preseason match on Friday.
"It wasn't long enough for me to do anything worth talking about," Goromaru said. "I wanted to have a little bit more playing time, but it was just my first game."
Coming off the bench in the 69th minute of a 31-18 defeat to fellow Australian side the Brumbies, Goromaru got a loud welcome from the home crowd and responded with a try-saving tackle reminiscent of the one he made against Scotland's Tommy Seymour at last year's Rugby World Cup.
Goromaru, who arrived in Brisbane on Saturday and took part in his first practice on Monday, converted a try at the end of the game at Ballymore Stadium for his first points with the Reds.
"First of all, I enjoyed getting into the game," he said. "I think people hoped to see my kicking and I was glad to do so in the first game."
"I want to do my best to be able to contribute to the Reds as soon as possible. I was happy to hear the support from Japanese (in the crowd)."
