URGENT: Japan court rules against running restarted Takahama reactors

OTSU, Japan, March 9, Kyodo

A Japanese district court ruled Wednesday that two nuclear reactors at Kansai Electric Power Co.'s Takahama plant on the Sea of Japan coast cannot operate despite having cleared a set of new safety standards introduced after the 2011 Fukushima disaster.

While a series of petitions seeking to halt the operation of the country's reactors have been filed following the nuclear crisis, it is the first time that a court issued an order on reactors that have resumed operations after meeting the new safety requirements.

Kansai Electric restarted the Nos. 3 and 4 reactors at Takahama plant in Fukui Prefecture earlier this year. The No. 4 unit shut down automatically in late February due to equipment trouble, but the utility is seeking to bring it back online.
