Japan court rules against running restarted Takahama reactors
OTSU, Japan, March 9, Kyodo
A Japanese district court on Wednesday ordered Kansai Electric Power Co. not to operate two nuclear reactors at its Takahama plant on the Sea of Japan coast despite their having cleared a set of new safety standards introduced after the 2011 Fukushima disaster.
The court judgment, the first of its kind affecting reactors that resumed operations under the post-Fukushima requirements, is a blow to the Japanese government's renewed push for nuclear power and could also cast doubt on the new safety regulations.
The Takahama plant is one of two nuclear power stations that are currently online. The injunction by the Otsu District Court will force the operator to shut down the No. 3 unit, which was restarted late January, and keep the No. 4 unit offline because its operation was recently suspended due to equipment trouble.
