5 yrs on, TEPCO renews sense of responsibility for nuclear disaster
FUKUSHIMA, Japan, March 11, Kyodo
The president of Tokyo Electric Power Co. pledged Friday that the operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant will never forget its responsibility for causing the catastrophic reactor meltdowns there five years ago.
Naomi Hirose said that while "big progress" has been made in the path toward decommissioning the damaged reactors, such as by removing spent nuclear fuel from a reactor pool, the utility faces a host of challenges in the cleanup work ahead.
"There is still a lot to be done," he said in remarks in front of employees at the power station in Fukushima Prefecture that were also relayed to TEPCO employees in Tokyo via live video. "Removing fuel debris and all spent fuel remain crucial tasks."
