Shikoku Electric to restart nuclear reactor as early as this summer
TOKYO, March 16, Kyodo
An idled reactor owned by Shikoku Electric Power Co. is set to restart as early as this summer, becoming the fifth unit to run under new safety rules, as it is expected to clear all of the regulator's key safety screening by the end of the month, sources close to the matter said Wednesday.
After going through on-site pre-operational checks, the No. 3 unit of the Ikata plant in Ehime Prefecture, western Japan, will resume operation under stricter regulations introduced following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster.
The government is trying to reactivate more reactors after the nuclear crisis led to a nationwide halt of nuclear plants, as it seeks to generate 20 to 22 percent of the country's overall electricity with nuclear power in 2030.
